July 27, 2021/Bio Valley BIOON/---In a new study, from the Free University of Berlin, the Max Planck Institute for Colloid and Interface, the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the City University of Hong Kong, China The personnel found that under laboratory conditions, several extracts from the artemisia annua plant can inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The relevant research results were published in the journal Scientific Reports on July 16, 2021, with the title of the paper "In vitro efficacy of artemisinin-based treatments against SARS-CoV-2".



In this paper, the authors describe the three Artemisia annua plant extracts they tested and their ability to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus in human lung tissue. Artemisia annua is a plant of the genus Artemisia, which is produced in parts of Asia and North America. It usually has various names, such as absinthe. Its extract is used as a treatment for malaria, and the most common type of treatment is based on artemisinin. The derivatives of artemisinin include artesunate and artemether, both of which are used to treat patients with malaria and have a reliable safety record. In this new study, the authors tried to determine whether artemisinin or its derivatives might be effective in treating COVID-19 patients. To find out, they infected human tissues with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a petri dish, and then added artemisinin or its derivatives.
